What Is Ceramic Coating? A Plain-English Explanation

Updated October 9, 2026 5 min readBy Dominick, owner of Slums Mobile Detailing

Ceramic coating gets talked about like magic. It isn't — it's a hard, clear protective layer that bonds to your paint. Here's what it actually is and what it does.

What is ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, usually silica-based (SiO2), that is applied by hand to a vehicle's paint and cures into a thin, hard, glass-like layer. It bonds to the clear coat and protects it from UV, road salt, bird droppings and grime while adding deep gloss and water beading. Think of it as wax on steroids.

What ceramic coating does

  • Adds a sacrificial layer that takes the abuse instead of your clear coat
  • Repels water and dirt, so the car stays cleaner and washes faster
  • Blocks UV that fades and oxidizes paint
  • Resists chemical etching from bird droppings, sap and salt
  • Deepens gloss and color

What it does not do

It's not bulletproof. It won't stop rock chips, deep scratches or dents, and it doesn't mean you never wash the car. Honest expectations are part of doing the job right.

Why the installer matters more than the bottle

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Prep, paint correction and application on your specific paint are where the result is won or lost — that's skill, not product. Slums offers three levels, all with a 6-year coating: Level 1 ($500) — full decontamination plus coating on paint; Level 2 ($650) — adds a one-stage paint correction; Level 3 ($1,000) — two-stage correction, full interior and exterior detail, and coating on paint, glass and wheels. Midsize vehicles add $150 and large vehicles add $350.
