What Is Paint Correction and Do You Need It?

If your paint looks dull or covered in spiderwebs in the sun, wax won't fix it. Paint correction will — when it's done by someone who knows how much clear coat they're working with.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is machine polishing that levels a very thin layer of clear coat to remove swirl marks, light scratches, water spots and oxidation. A one-stage correction typically removes 60–70% of defects; a two-stage cut and polish goes further for a near-flawless finish.

Why skill matters more than the polish

Clear coat is thinner than a sheet of paper. Every brand and color behaves differently — soft Japanese paints, hard German paints, black that shows everything. Choosing the right pad, compound and pressure is the real job, and it's why correction should never be a DIY experiment.

One-stage vs two-stage

  • One-stage: single polish, big gloss improvement, ideal for newer cars (included in Ceramic Level 2, $650).
  • Two-stage: heavy cut then refine, for neglected paint (included in Ceramic Level 3, $1,000).

Questions people ask

If your fingernail catches in it, it's likely through the clear coat and can only be improved, not fully removed.
Yes. Correction makes paint perfect; a ceramic coating helps keep it that way.
